Marietta Sedation Dentistry Helps Your Dental Phobia
Do you need a Marietta sedation dentist? Call 770-884-6559 today. A patient’s fear of the dentist can be created as a result of a bad dental experience, particularly in youth. Or, dental phobia can stem from other disorders, such as mood or anxiety disorders, substance abuse, or even post-traumatic stress from past incidences of domestic violence or abuse.
Regardless of the root of the dental phobia, this Marietta sedation dentist understands the common connection for most is a pervasive feeling of being out of control during the dental treatment process.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Our Marietta sedation dentist services provides for a more relaxing, virtually pain-free trip to the dentist through use of specialized medication to alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress caused by dental phobia. It is also used for patients who have a low pain threshold, very sensitive teeth, a bad gag reflex, trouble sitting still, or those who will be receiving a large amount of dental work at once. Children are sometimes sedated during dentistry, if they have trouble being cooperative during the care visit.
How Sedated Will I Be?
When considering using the Marietta sedation dentist, many patients falsely assume that they will be completely unconscious during their procedure. That is not generally the case. There are several levels of sedation and the dentist will use the best level for the patient’s situation and procedural needs:
- Minimal sedation: the patient is awake but more relaxed.
- Moderate sedation: the patient may not remember the procedures and will likely slur words when speaking.
- Deep sedation: the patient is slightly conscious and can still be awakened.
- General anesthesia: the patient is completely unconscious and will awaken only after the medication has run its course.
How is the Sedation Administered?
A Marietta sedation dentist will consider the level of anxiety, age, weight, and medical history of the patient to determine the best level and type of sedation for that individual. The types of dental sedation are: (Note that this Marietta sedation dentist office performs the first two types of sedation, but we do not do IV and General Anesthesia. The information is provided for educational purposes only.)
- Inhaled minimal sedation: The patient breathes nitrous oxide combined with oxygen through a mask. Also called “laughing gas,” the nitrous relaxes the patient through an easily controlled dosing which wears off quickly. For those who must drive themselves home after a procedure, this is the only safe option.
- Oral sedation: Ranging from minimal to moderate, this sedation is generally administered about an hour before the dental procedure. Halcion is a commonly prescribed pill which makes the patient drowsy yet still able to be awakened.
- IV moderate sedation: Through an intravenous administration of a sedative, the IV sedation works more quickly than an oral means and allows the dentist to monitor and adjust the level of sedation throughout the dental visit.
- Deep sedation with general anesthesia: In this instance of sedation, the patient is on the verge of unconsciousness or becomes totally unconscious. This form of sedation will involve oral, IV and/or other means of medication administration.
Our Marietta sedation dentist team wants your to know that in addition to the chosen type of sedation, a local anesthetic will be necessary for numbing of the area around teeth being worked upon, as well as to alleviate pain during and after the procedure.
